Reflective Ignatian Walks in WA
There have been two reflective Ignatian walks recently held near Perth over the last few months. The first was at Salter Point in May, with a second one also in the vicinity of the Canning River beginning at the Kent Street Weir in July.
There were 12 or 13 people on each of these occasions. Beginning with an acknowledgment of country and a brief history of the indigenous association with the areas where the participants were walking, the groups were invited to walk in silence and be open to how the Spirit might be stirring in them as we walked in beautiful surroundings.
Notable highlights included the sighting of the local osprey, a feeding frenzy on the river from a shoal of fish providing a feast for pelicans, terns, silver gulls, and cormorants. Many people commented on the serenity peacefulness and beauty which surrounded them and brought a sense of hope in a world which is too often busy and noisy to allow any contemplative space.
Some people brought a notebook and recorded some of their thoughts in a journal. Everyone was invited to reflect at the end of the walk and share how the experience had touched them and suggestions were made about future activities.
A request was made after the first walk to learn more about Ignatian spirituality. Accordingly at the halfway mark of the second walk a talk was given by one of the leaders describing what was meant by Ignatian spirituality and practice.
Recommendations included walks in a variety of locations in different seasons of the Noongar year; on different days apart from Saturday; and various times of day depending upon the season.
Another highlight of these gatherings was the social element and relationships built as people shared lunch and conversation at the conclusion of the walk.
The planning committee would welcome further suggestions, ideas, locations, and recommendations to ensure that future walks address the desires of people wish to live life more contemplatively.
